How to Find Your Steam Login Name (Account Name) in 2026
Your Steam login name is the account name you type on the Steam sign-in screen. Steam shows it at the top of the Account details page. This guide shows where to find it on every device and how to tell it apart from the names that look similar.
The short version
- Steam desktop app: click your profile name in the top right corner, choose Account details. The title reads "<login>'s account".
- Browser: sign in at store.steampowered.com and open store.steampowered.com/account. The same title shows the login.
- Steam mobile app: open the menu, choose Account details. The login is at the top.
- The login name never changes. Copy it once and it works for every future top-up of that account.
Login name, profile name, SteamID and custom URL
Steam accounts carry four different identifiers, and only one of them is used for a wallet top-up by login. Mixing them up is the most common reason a top-up form shows an error.
| Identifier | Example | Where it appears | Used for a top-up |
|---|---|---|---|
| Login name (account name) | gamer_alex2009 | Sign-in screen, Account details title | Yes |
| Profile name (nickname) | Alex | Friends list, community profile | No |
| SteamID64 | 76561198000000000 | Profile link without a custom URL | No |
| Custom URL | steamcommunity.com/id/alexplays | Profile link | No |
The profile name can be changed at any time and many players share the same one, so it cannot identify a wallet. The SteamID and custom URL point to the community profile. The login name is the one value that is unique, private to the sign-in process and fixed for the life of the account.
Find the login in the Steam desktop app
- Open Steam on Windows, macOS or Linux and make sure you are signed in.
- Click your profile name in the top right corner of the window.
- Choose Account details from the menu.
- Read the page title: it says "<login>'s account". Everything before "'s account" is your login name.
- Select the name and copy it. Paste it into the top-up form exactly as shown.
The Account details page also shows the store country and the wallet balance with its currency sign, which tells you whether the wallet is in dollars, tenge or hryvnia. Checking both on the same page takes a few seconds and prevents surprises.
Find the login in a web browser
On a computer without the Steam app, sign in at store.steampowered.com, then open store.steampowered.com/account. The title at the top of the page is the same "<login>'s account" line. This also works in a phone browser with the desktop site turned on.
Find the login in the Steam mobile app
In the Steam app for Android or iOS, tap the menu, open Account details and look at the top of the screen. If you use the mobile app only for Steam Guard, the same page is available in the store section of the app.
The login name is shown only to you while you are signed in. Nobody can look it up from your profile page, which is exactly why a top-up uses it: it identifies the wallet without giving any access to the account.
What a valid Steam login looks like
- Latin letters a to z, digits 0 to 9 and the underscore character.
- At least 3 characters, no spaces, no @ sign and no dots.
If you pasted something with a space, an email address or a link, the form shows a short hint under the field. Copy the login from Account details again and paste it without anything around it.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Typing the profile name. It is the most visible name in Steam, but it is not unique. Use the Account details title instead.
- Pasting a profile link. A steamcommunity.com link identifies the profile, not the wallet. Use the login.
- Typing from memory. One wrong letter can point to another existing account. Copy and paste.
- Sharing the password. No top-up needs it. Keep the password and Steam Guard codes to yourself.
Ready to add money? Open the Steam top-up form, enter the login and the amount, and see the price before you pay. Answers about orders and credit are on the FAQ page.
